Director Christopher Nolan's film "Oppenheimer" earned a total of more than 1 trillion won in ticket sales at movie theaters around the world.
On the 4th (local time), according to Box Office Mojo, a U.S. movie box office aggregation site, "Oppenheimer" earned a total of $852.984 million (about KRW 1.1255 trillion) in the U.S. and other global markets from its release on the previous day.
Imports from the U.S. amounted to $312.71 million (about KRW 409.4 billion) and other global market revenues were USD 542.71 million (about KRW 716.2 billion).
Variety, an entertainment media, said, "The dark R-rated (under the age of 17 must be accompanied by adults such as parents), which mainly unfolds in the dreary rooms of talkative scientists and politicians, is setting a box office record that breaks expectations."
The film's production cost is worth $100 million (about 132 billion won), and investment distributors Universal Pictures and Nolan have made huge profits.
Within seven weeks of its release, "Oppenheimer" became director Lee's third-ever box office film after Nolan's previous films "Dark Night Rise" ($1.08 billion) and "Dark Night" ($1 billion). It also recorded the third-largest box office revenue among Hollywood films released this year after "Bobby" ($1.38 billion) and "Super Mario Brothers Movie" ($1.36 billion).
"Oppenheimer" is an adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning film "American Prometheus" and depicts the story of Robert Oppenheimer, a physicist who led the development of the atomic bomb during World War II.
Actors Killian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt and Florence Pew appeared.
